Berkeley High, not Cal, but ya...
It was rather entertaining, I must say. If the poster people had kept doing it for a few more days it would have ended up in our school newspaper (I am a photographer for it, so I get the inside scoop.)

Of course there is the simple answer to how did they get (up) so high: Its Berkeley, everyone is high. :)
Actually not, though there definately is a higher percentage here than in other places...

I can tell you (quite surely) why D_Hall decided to post this thread; It is the "apparent need" for EVERY engineer (that I've ever come across), to present themselves in a manner in which would make the average lamen, question their "tone".

Funny though, that the average idiots, who earn 1/3 of an engineers yearly salary, are usually the ones who wind up getting the over-engineered POS to work properly, either by redesigning it, or bypassing 17 unnecessary parts.

Would it help ya, DR, to know that my other hobby is running a porn site?

As for tone... It's really very odd. The regulations allow us to speak in general terms but generally prohibit the use of certain words. My biggest customer is like that. There are pictures of my test activities out there on the Internet. The test events are in no way classified... But oddly enough I am prohibited from directly linking myself to those test events. So while I can talk of specific activities, I can not talk of MY specific activities.

And it doesn't have to make sense, it's the government!

It makes a hissss.

The damned thing is impressive though. About an 1/8" curf is all, and the curf meshes *perfectly* at the end of the cut. Don't know how long it took for the welders to set it up, but I got to watch the actual cut of a 30" diameter pipe. Didn't take more than 10 minutes and the cut was *clean*.

So, is there a "2-axis" version of the bug? One that can cut a circular hole in a round pipe?

Just wondering, I've been toying with the idea of building a CNC router for wood and plastics ... the motorized bug looks like it is probably driven by a big-ass stepper motor.

Not to my knowledge, but there ARE tools out there designed to basically do that job. I believe they're known as pipe notchers.

Programmable Gantry System from Bug-O Systems

The Programmable Gantry System provides coordinated motion in two axes, using three drives: two synchronized motors drive the main carriages along the X-axis, and one drives the Y-axis crossbeam carriage. The machine can be easily programmed to repeat any contour or pattern for either cutting or welding applications. A handheld terminal supplied with the machine is used to program the required shape and operation sequence. Other functions besides moves can be programmed, such as starts, stops, delays, repeats and rapid traverse. Ten programs can be stored in machine memory at any one time. A PC option is available which includes a connecting cable and a software program. With this, the operator can create any number of shapes on a PC and store them on disk. Selected shapes can then be downloaded into the machine as needed.

Yes, but that only does it on a flat surface (and we have one of those on order too, from what I understand. :D ), not on the curved surface of a pipe (as requested by Jimmy).

Amazing what people come up with. We need a "Tools and Discussion" section.

Well make one!
There is only one way to find out whether that section will be filled with useless crap or interesting information.
