biopro - it was used as a gun on a BV pnue, 1.25 coke bottle, 110 psi there-abouts the side blew out onto ma mates face, used only once before hand. From what i can remember it was sunny so it had to be 20 - 40 deg C. It happened 2 years back hard to remember all details

The place of origin of the bottle will affect its strength significantly. Here in Australia the bottles are very thin walled and burst at lower pressures, many other countys have much better quality bottles capable of much higher pressures, I know Denmark has good thick walled bottles. As for using the bottles for air tanks, I don't think it is a good idea, stick to pressure rated parts. Keep the use of bottles limited to air/water rockets.

I think this thread was on the idea of using bottles as preloaded cartridges in cannons. So pressurize bottle to 100 psi and burst it with a spike to fire.
I believe it was not on actually using them as chambers.

Even if it is a preloaded cartridge it is still an air chamber, and one with an unknown safe working pressure.

Trigun, it was about neither of those things but hey, don't forget that you have to have a valve in the bottle, which means recoil might damage it (IMO they are tough and cheap enough for it not to matter.

Anyway, upon investigation it seems that piercing isn't very effective for cardboard disks, although these only slipped out, they didn't actually burst when I took them to 110psi. When punctured, they just leaked out of the hole.
HDPE (milk jug) also slipped out, and plastic bag is still effective but not strong enough for high pressures.
There is nothing else I can really think of, I plan to try some rubber If I can get ahold of it too.
Anyone have any ideas?


Carlman - odd perhaps you do have different strength bottles. The temperature here is about 10*C, so perhaps the additional heat from pumping on top of 30*C weakened it. Otherwise I guess it's your own risk whether or not you use them. From what you've said I wouldn't be reccomending it, but still would feel happy using one with earplugs and gloves.
