was just thinking instead of having a pressure chamber to launch a projectile why dont you make the projectile have its own power source
what you guys think:

all the yellow represents a spring
the blue represents wire
umm everything else is pretty self explanatory but post if you dont understand

i think that will be a very expensive cannon to run.
look at JSRs designs and make a pneumatic cartridge gun.

Had thoughts on it before, sort of a reversed burst-disc.
No need for ejection, but depending on the burst disc material it might build up burst disc debris.
I think a liquid stored gas (inside projectile) should give better volume, but then there's possible freezing issues (the liquid freezes into ice bb's and thaws slowly sometimes).
I was looking at This link JSR had linked to on a different topic, and thought of a simpler version, except with the domed end removed and a burst-disc sandwiched between washers.

The design problem then is which fill valve to use.
I dreamed up maybe using a smaller hydraulic grease check valve, melting some lead in the cart. and pressurizing it while the (weighed amt.) lead is liquid, then cools (sealing the valve).
Seems pretty tedious though, Unless many at a time could be produced.

Given the price of each round I think you would be disappointed with the performance.

Even if you added a nozzle to get reasonable conversion of the energy in the cartridge to kinetic energy, you still have the problem that the cartridges are not aerodynamically stable. They'll start to tumble within a few feet of the barrel. At perhaps $0.50/shot you would hope to do better than that.

You might be able to come up with something that'll act as both a nozzle and a tail fin.

Even I've done it once. I came up with a rig that fitted over the end of my air rifle, then just fired a pellet into the base of the cartridge, which worked fine.
Entertaining, but power was pretty wimpy, and certainly not worth the price of running it.

It put a minor dent in 1.5" chipboard. Compare that to HEAL could manage if you filled it with the cartridge, then loaded the empty into the breech - it was capable of going through the same chipboard. Same source of energy, same projectile, very different power.

Anyway as far as the air rifle is concerned, it's much more fun to put the cartridges down range and shoot the bases out from a respectable distance. Sort of reactive targets - just with a very very small target zone.
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

My uncle made a single shot version of that. He said it got good range and nice power. He had a 7 foot tube, and a small lathed spike at the bottom. He just dropped the cartriges in like a mortar.
