My point was that it is far easier to build a powerful pneumatic than it is to build a similarly powerful springer, unless you have access to a machine shop and high quality materials it is simply not worth the effort to make a springer.

Yeah, but I'm designing it for skirmishes, not just plinking around. I'd much rather have to cock the gun each time than be carrying around air tanks, having to refill them all the time, etc.

If you're making a sniper you could hardcore mod a gun. Buy a cheap springer pistol, beef it up, add a pneumatic ram, longer barrel, silencer and scope.

In that case, who needs gas rams:D

Presumably you'll have to make two or more then?

I never liked it as much, especially not the pump-action. It just aint sniper enough. Anyway, here's my design, please criticise.

I would do away with the porting in the cylinder. Theory aside, how do you plan on putting it together in terms of materials and construction?

Mostly its PVC, the dummy piston is stailess steel, the main piston is 260 PSI PVC, The main body is all PVC, basically the same as Boltsniper's. O rings are used for seals (I think)

The reason I'm porting is because the cylinder:barrel volume ratio shouldn't be more than 3:1 for an airsoft rifle. Because its a fairly heavy piston it's got to pick up some speed before it starts compressing or it won't be fast enough (I think.)

You know, I was wondering, what must the efficiency of airsoft AEG's be, runing on battery power? It must be pretty damn good with the size of springs they've got in there, they're not massive.

The motors are heavily geared so the springs aren't that wimpy - which again begs the question, if you want this for airsoft, why not just use a coil spring?

Because the force is not constant, and therefore I will need a higher peak force for the same energy, and I'd rather have a stroke pull that doesn't put massive stress on the whole system. However, It's definitely still an option. Just depends whether I can make my gas ram work well or not.

I would say it's a challenging enough project without using a gas ram, and using a coil spring would up your chances of actually finishing it. If all you need is something for airsoft skirmishing, there's no need to go into such complication as it won't take a massive spring to get the sort of power you need.
