If you know projectile velocity and weight you can calculate approximately what the recoil forces will be, still I don't expect it will be worse than a 12 bore

Sorry i didn't see this sooner, But, my brake is not open on the end, it's bore is only 1/8" larger than the barrel bore, it's made from a piece of 1.125"IDx2od" aluminum pipe/tube...
The Muzzle brake actually vents towards the back. No need for elbows. The fitting does it for us. We are going to slice off the connector parts for the 2" holes. That will help the gasses vent back more. Thanks, anyway Jeepkhan. We were seriously thinking about a ported brake. We looked around our local hardware store and came up with this one.

What a monster! I like it. I'm really surprized that the muzzle brake made that much difference. OTOH, I did have a large pneumatic that gave significant recoil w/o a projectile, so I guess it's reasonable.

It's a chamber into which propellant gasses are bled, this tends to create a flow out of the muzzle after the projectile has left which keeps the exhaust gasses from entering the turret. This is why you see it on enclosed turret systems but not on towed artillery.
