A homemade piston valve may offer a better flow than a QEV. That's why.

Ok, I think I got it. Now to ask an obvious question.

How would you know which valve would perform better by design (in say a smaller cannon)? By testing it, or would the GGDT be able to predict the performance?

GGDT can predict the performance if you model it accurately. Of course testing will tell it for sure.
