The Official High-Speed Camera Thread
I think it would surely have to be software related... I believe that some cameras lock optical zoom when recording because the noise of the mechanism completely overloads their primitive mics, making a hell of a racket which people would then critisize in reviews. It's easiest just to remove the feature.
Case in point, is my Canon Powershot A540... you don't get optical zoom on that when filming at all, but thanks to a firmware hack called CHDK, you CAN get this feature. So it's obviously just a software choice and not a hardware limitation, on that camera at least.

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

Premiere Elements. It's not that sophisticated, but it is at least better than Windows Movie Maker.nature-boy wrote:What software did you use for speeding the video up again, Ragnarok?
Still, WMM does have effects which speed up/slow down the video by a factor of 2. These can be stacked for a factor of 8, which works great for the 240 fps of the FH-100 and FC-150, and well enough for the 210 fps of the FC-100 and FS-10, to speed it back up to "normal" speed.
This is being pedantic, but the Casio Exilim-F line uses CMOS sensors, not CCDs.because I noticed a ccd- error
It's part of the reason they can work so fast, because CMOS takes less time to read the data from the image sensor, although the less mature technology does tend to have slightly higher image noise.
This. The hardware has huge potential, but it's let down heavily in some areas by the software.ramses wrote:I'll be truely happy if (when) something like CHDK comes out for the casio line to remove all their stupid bugs.

In other news, I know I saw "Flash continuous shutter" listed amongst the features of the FH-100 - it's on this page here.
Now, as far as I can tell, it doesn't actually have such a feature. It's not listed in the manual, and I can't find any combination of the high speed CS options (either mechanical or CMOS shutter at any rate/number of photos) which will enable the use of the flash.
I may be being an idiot, but I have tried pretty hard and can't find it. It's not devastating to not have such a feature, but it is disappointing.

Ehhm, I did that on purpose, waiting for somebody to notice. :tongue3:Ragnarok wrote: This is being pedantic, but the Casio Exilim-F line uses CMOS sensors, not CCDs.
Congratulations, you won, here you have your prize: :kermit: an annoying kermit smily.
seriously, I knew it has a cmos, but just typed ccd as a synonym for sensor
I'm sorry to possibly disappoint you, but it must be a mistake,on this site, the european one, its not listed as a feature. Among the High Speed Models, it seems that only the F1 and the FH-20 / FH-25 have it. Can somebody confirm that?Ragnarok wrote:In other news, I know I saw "Flash continuous shutter" listed amongst the features of the FH-100
...and speaking of the zoom, maybe it will be in a firmware-update, but I fear it won't, for the reason Insomniac told us.

I suspect the last firmware update caused my camera to start corrupting videos on slower cards. At this point, I trust open source more. I can't imagine Casio cameras would be harder to hack than Canon ones. The interest in Casio probably hasn't started until around now, when people discover how lously the original firmware is.
Somewhere in this thread is a list of my grievances with my EX-F1.

Are you running the Windows 7 version? I can't seem to find the spped up/slow down function.Still, WMM does have effects which speed up/slow down the video by a factor of 2. Windows Vista. However, I haven't updated it in ages - perhaps the feature's been removed in more recent versions.Vincenzo wrote:Are you running the Windows 7 version? I can't seem to find the spped up/slow down function.
The effects list is alphabetical - they're called "Slow Down, Half" and "Speed up, Double" on my version, so they should be in the S section if they're there.

Nope, it's not there. Shame, because I like going frame by frame to see how stuff happens.

Right then. Find VirtualDub - it's free software.
Use the frame rate decimation settings to change the speed - set the "frame rate" to the recording frame rate (i.e. 210 fps), then set the decimation to "Convert to 30 fps"
This will play it back as if it were a 210 fps video, but only render every seventh frame. After that, export it and put it into your normal editing software.
VirtualDub is good software which does things WMM (and even some commercial editors) can't. Worth a look.

Yeah it's not there for me either GF.
@Rag, I'll have a look at it. Thanks.

Today I used my camera to chrony some airsoft guns
First one is a sniper and the rest are my bbmg. The max velocity I got was 350, but I need someone to confirm my math. What I did was:
Counted the frames it takes to go 24 inches (each stripe is 1 inch)
Divided by two.
Divide 1000 by the number I just got.
LOL I'm not really sure this is right, but it seems pretty accurate...
ANYWAY. Here are the vids...

Notice how some go faster than others... I got a high speed video of a bbmg I built for my friend firing white bb's... and we were surprised by something we saw. Turns out the thing is so innacurate because the bb's collide with eachother in the air... I'll upload the video if you guys are interested.
Ohhh and I forgot to post it before, but here is another fruit destruction video lololol 8)

Good work, your math seems sound, shame you don't have an actual chrony to verify the data though. And cool fruit shots

Thanks for verifying
Ok here it is, it's a short clip with only a few collisions but this bbmg doesn't have such a high rof.

fascinating, you should try at 1000 fps with the camera strapped to the barrel...
