can be threaded in standard fittings & they've got threaded shafts
What I was trying to say is that it would help to keep everything servicable and you could use a regular 3/4" or 1" pipe for the main housing. While it wouldn't be easier to add a slit for the charging handle it would definitely survive longer than a copper one

After my experiences with the "valveless" cartridge pneumatic I'm confident I can get this to work without external forces cycling the bolt, testing due this evening if the cartridge and bolt are sufficiently cured.

Ohh I didn't say you've got to use air to extend retract the air cylinder.... I'd use it becasue it is a ready made thing that is good at uhmmm extending and retracting... plus it would make fine tuning easy - you know pump it up to higher/lower pressure

Ah, you mean gas spring instead of coil spring?

OK, this isn't going anywhere - the forces involved are a bit too much.

Here it is at 5x, really weak in terms of power, it destroyed the thick rubber extractor while still slightly chipping the cartridge, and to top it all off the cartridge knocked the camera over

I added a spacer to the spring to increase compression and gave it a whirl at 7x, this time with the camera out of harms way. Again, just a dent in a steel sheet but it destroyed the rear epoxy endcap and bent the bolt itself out of shape.

Here's the damage, back to the drawing board...

I think you may need a thicker bolt or better support for it somehow. it seems that that bolt rod is extremely flexible, and susceptible to bending as a result.

Maybe use a tougher spring? Maybe use a prolongation tube, in which the cartridge goes, so that even when it begins to cycle, gases continue to be pushed in the only way possible : the barrel.

What about an air spring? A telescoping cylinder... should be within reach in terms of either building such a thing or using a purpose-made pneumatic cylinder.

I say because threaded rod/bolts are usually more flexible than equivalent sized tubing, or so I've found when building my pump.

I suggest that you may be able to solve all of the problems by changing the design of the bolt housing, and making the bolt far thicker. Using a much thicker bolt, it could retract into a rear cylindrical housing with a close tolerance, and enclosing the spring entirely in the housing. As I hope you're aware, it's possible to purchase springs with insane spring constants on McMaster...
