I used to be really good at the shim pick method, but it only works with crappy locks! :D

Never got into this much, only enough to pick my front door with a semi-decent success rate. I could never get the hang of padlocks or small stuff.

However, I do remember what was perhaps one of my greatest mcguyver moments. Once, at a friends house and lacking a set of lock picks, I picked a padlock with KClO4/ NaC6H5CO2.

Ah, you mean the shim method for padlocks? Or is this something different? I've never heard of a "shim pick" method before.

It's for combo locks. You take a shim (I used soda can) and slide it around one side of the loop, then shove it down into the body and it unlocks it mysteriously ;) problem is, there has to be enough clearance between the hole the loop goes in and the loop itself. That's why it doesn't work with good quality locks.

Did you read the first sentence of my post?

Shimming padlocks or combination locks is a bypass method, not a picking method.

@Fnord: I'd very much like to see how you pulled that off. You could tell me via PM if you're inclined to.
