Muddyspudman, I am not bored of this site I am bored of people like you on it. You pollute these forums with pointless questions that you very easily could think out for yourself. I find it interesting that you say I am the one that chooses what I respond to, and then criticize me for the choices that I make. Your post suggests that you can't figure out something as simple as adding a strap to your cannon, and people with an IQ that low simply do not belong. So, if you feel that I'm saying you don't belong perhaps, in a way, I am.
You have 14 posts. You are four days old in the eyes of this forum. Now is no time to try and get into a pissing contest with the moderators. You will not win.

Now see muddyspudman, I've got some advice for you.

Read the rules of a forum before posting. Then you would...

A) Know not to post topic questions to which an answer can easily be
found by searching. Section 5, Part B

B) Know not to argue with a mod. You shouldn't even have to read the
rules to know that one. Section 8, Part D

Just don't be that guy.

I'd just like to comment, guys...

Muddyspudman posted a (kind of dumb) question about a strap for his cannon. I posted back and recommended he attach it with zip ties or hose straps and avoid putting any holes in the cannon that aren't required. I answered his (newb-ish) question without flaming him, he thanked me, and all was well.

Beyond reminding him that he should search before posting newb-ish questions, why bother to flame him? Seriously. Telling him to search first next time is all that's required.

This whole argument has done nothing productive, it has not educated anyone about potato cannons or forum politics, all it's done is piss people off. I'm sorry to say, but I'm going to side with muddyspudman on this.

The patrons of this forum need to be more sensitive about telling new members to search, and posting links to helpful information for them, instead of flaming. The problem is not just the new members; it's also the forum patrons that flame them.

I know I'm not a moderator (although if asked to be one, I happily would), but I feel that I have some right to say these things because I try to be part of the solution and never part of the problem.
Look back through my posts; I've never flamed anyone, my posts are always helpful, well-written, and grammatically correct. When people post stupid questions, I give them an answer and a few links to read, and remind them to search first next time. If we could all work harder on handling forum newbs like I do, we wouldn't have arguments like this.

Sorry for the rant, but I think everyone here needs to think about it.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

We don't all go around playing 'flame the new guy'. Just that when a dumba</i>ss like yourself shows up, we tend to pick on them. You know why? Because we always win. The dumbas</i>ses leave, and the good folks stay. Think of it as a sort of social Darwinism. If you piss off the big fish, they eat you. If you have a symbiotic relation ship with them, then you stick around to see another day.

And, if that wasn't enough, here is just one more little analogy for you.

BC, I'm honestly sorry to be arguing with a mod, but I have to respectfully disagree with your attitude. I truly mean “respectfully disagree”.

Muddy's only mistake was not searching before posting.
This is a forum for potato cannon enthusiasts to share information with each other, post designs, ask questions, help each other out, right? Seriously, answer that one for me. Isn’t that what this forum is for?

It's true that Muddy's question was kind of a dumb one, but he didn't violate any forum rules, he wasn't rude or impolite to anyone (at first, until the flaming started), and I don't think he did anything wrong. Re-reading this thread, the argument didn’t start until you posted: “Dear God, when they come to the point that people can't make simple decisions like this for themselves? Do we really need to have a forum post for every little thing? Come on guys, it is getting a little bit ridiculous, don't you think?”. The thread went downhill from there.

Well yes, it is a little ridiculous to ask how to attach a strap; any of us could figure that out with 5 minutes time and/or a search. But asking the question is not a crime, nor is it impolite, flaming, or anything else offensive. I just want to point out, if you had posted a link to some cannons with straps, or to a relevant Wiki article, instead of the whole “Dear God” routine, we wouldn’t have this two-page argumentative thread.

Again, if all the forum patrons could try harder to tell newbs to search and give them links to helpful information instead of flaming them, we wouldn’t have problems like this!!! It’s the truth.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

Don't worry Pete, you're handling this right way, just as many before you have. Not searching before posting (but honestly, does this sort of thing even warrant searching? Shouldn't it be all too obvious?) was a mistake, true, but his real mistake was the way he converses with the moderators- that is where my beef is.
Instead of answering your question I'm simply going to modify your statement to the way I think it should be.
"This is a forum for potato cannon enthusiasts to share information with each other, post designs, ask intelligent questions, help each other out."
While it is true that he did not flame, break the rules, act impolitely, or anything else of that nature- I did find his stupidity completely and utterly offensive.
It's no doubt true that if all forum patrons tried harder to tell newbs to search, gave them helpful links and information in instead of flaming them we wouldn't have this problem. But instead we would have a problem much worse -- we'd be so overrun with incompetent fools that we'd hardly be able to breathe.[/b]

@BC,
I completely see your point and understand how you'd be frustrated.
My only comment is that, if we tried my approach of trying to educate the newbs by telling them to search and posting helpful links, after a little while, they wouldn't be newbs anymore.
Otherwise, we end up with lots of threads like this cluttering up the forum - so which ends up being worse?

In any case I think we've made some progress here. Thanks for your response.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

Pete, I think you misunderstand. I don't have a negative disposition towards him because he is the new guy I have a negative disposition towards him because he comes off as a complete idiot- there are somethings that others are rarely able to change.
Posts can be deleted, idiots are forever. Just look at how long it took to get rid of Ben Stern.

@BC,
I never said you have a negative disposition towards him just for being new - I know you (and all the mods here) are more mature than that.

Everyone gets a bit pissed off at people who ask stupid questions, including myself - I'm just thinking that posting helpful links is probably the best way to handle it, and not responding at all is probably a more reasonable route to go than flaming newbies, which tends to result in threads like this one.
I guess it's a microcosm of "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". I'm not trying to offend you or tell you that you're wrong, I'm just stating my point of view.
At the same time, though, you're absolutely right; posts can be deleted but idiots are forever. Chevyracing08 was a perfect example of that.
So, I'll try hard to lead by example and post helpful links and reminders to search whenever someone asks a dumb question, and see if the other forum patrons catch on. I doubt they will, and it's probably a waste of my time, but I'll try anyway.
I'll also PM Pcguy and suggest making the Search button nice and big and easy to spot, or maybe putting a "Did you search first?" reminder whenever someone starts a thread. I think that'd help a lot.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

I'm not sure why you keep bringing up how 'new' he is... This isn't flaming newbies, it is yelling at morons. The fact that he is new is irrelevant. (Yes, I know that you would prefer me too follow the 'if you don't have anything nice to say...' rule in this case as well.)
A quote from George Carlin come to mind:
" 'Live and let live,' That's what I always say. Anyone that can't agree with that- go out back and shoot the mother fu</i>ck</i>er."

I am perfectly okay with living by your rule- but only if I can tolerate the people I am living with.

Perhaps this whole argument was something that would eventually have happened. It was the built-up "pressure" from various threads/posts over the weeks/months/years and, like any good bomb, eventually blows.

Why is it that it took me 5 minutes to figure out how to put furniture (butt-stock and grip) and a sling on my coaxial air cannon (which I’ll post as soon as I fix it…) but you had to ask how? Why is it that nobody can figure anything out anymore, how much help do you think the Wright Brothers got when they made the Wright Flyer? Not much if any at all! The reason so many people get mad at the “noobs” is because a lot of them ask retarded questions, i.e. “I got no skool this week and I want to mak a pudgun, can somebody give me plans” (actually they usually don’t use such big words and spell worst, that’s about the worst I can spell.), plus if they can’t figure out the simple things chances are they’re to DUMB to SAFELY use a cannon. If you can’t even figure out how to attach a sling, I’m beginning to wonder if you should even be shooting a spud gun with out “adult” supervision.
Hay here’s a radical new idea, it’s called: using you brain!!!!
Now I don’t go around “flaming the noob”, I just don’t won’t people to get hurt. Have you ever bean taught basic firearm safety? Ether way, for your safety and those around you when you're handling your cannon, I suggest you read the topic on “spud gun safety rules” (my signature is a link to said topic).
Now then I strongly suggest you think before you post, don’t ask dumb questions and don’t make the modds, or me, mad!

Edit: you didn’t know BC pneumatics existed!?! There’s proof that you need to do more research…
