1st attempt w/ damage
This is my first pneumatic. I must admit, it's kind of embarrassing compared to most of the guns I've seen here.
It has a 3/4 inch chamber with 4 6 inch air chambers tied in and a 1/2 inch ball valve. It has a 4 foot long 1/2 inch diameter barrel.
At 125 psi all of the darts I have made are destroyed on impact, so I fashioned a slug by melting soldier into a 3/4 inch long piece of 1/2 inch copper(lined with alum. foil). I then cut the copper away leaving a perfect slug. I had no clue how powerful pneumatics could be, so I thought I could get away with letting it off in the house (VERY DUMB).
At 125 psi the slug blew straight through a 5/8 inch sheet of mdf and through 1 layer of sheet rock (gulp).

better then my first but the design is a little awkward. Never seen copper fittings like that.
not to bad at all and those lil chambers are kool.
but i think you could turn this into an under and over and put a modded sprinkler valve or piston valve on it then this thing could be looking and performing a bit better than it already is.
anyways all up i reckon it ain't to bad for a first attempt, keep up the good work mate

That thing looks cool. I never thought Of trying to build a pneumatic before but I might try one sometime. I liked combustion cannons, but I just might make a pneumatic soon. They look easier to build and not to complicated either.
mate sooner or later the "pneumatics" will get you!ArticWolf wrote:That thing looks cool. I never thought Of trying to build a pneumatic before but I might try one sometime. I liked combustion cannons, but I just might make a pneumatic soon. They look easier to build and not to complicated either.
i thought that my combustion was tops (well it still is) but now i have a 16mm bore pneumatic and i dont care about my combustion anymore, they are great.

The little copper chambers look interesting, what are they sold as?
I'd think of them more as ammo than chamber but it looks like it works for you.
Incidentally I copied your lead slug casting thing today with about a metre of soldering wire and it came out great

Man for your first cannon, you did a fine job! I'm impressed, totaly, and i don't impress easiely. What got damaged in your house when you tested it? I allmost destroyed my welder testing mine, put a healthy dent just above the switchs. That has to be like the cleanest build for a first that i've seen. Very very nice!!!
It is awkward. It's designed to lay across the shoulder so I can use my right hand to steady it by gripping the front chamber, and the left hand to throw the valve which allows me to sight directly down the barrel.pyromaniac wrote:better then my first but the design is a little awkward. The over under idea is excellent as it is WAY to long right now. I'm in the process of locating a sprinkler valve for it also.
I bought the chambers at Home Depot. They are listed on the shelf as 1/2 inch stub outs but the tag on the part itself states that it is a 6 inch air chamber. They are actually 3/4 inch across the thick part of the chamber.Hotwired wrote:The little copper chambers look interesting, what are they sold as?

I'm very pleased with the slugs. My first few attempts were disappointing, but once we lined the tube with foil, it came out great.

Thanks (everyone) for the positive comments!jrrdw wrote:Man for your first cannon, you did a fine job! I'm impressed, totaly, and i don't impress easiely. I had the piece of mdf resting against a wall. I had been using it as a target for the darts. The slug blew clean through it and into my kitchen wall. Nothing a little patchwork wont fix! The best part of it all is that my wife hasn't seen the hole yet!!!
